Are You A Real Genealogist?

Well, it's that time of year again, when we all start getting bored with ourselves and start wondering if other people we deal with online are "real genealogists" or not.

In the interest of transparency, I have decided to provide anyone interested with a flowchart of my own gauge of your genealogical realness, as decided by me, using my own criteria. Sort of a mind-map of how I am judging you whenever I read your blog/forum post/wiki edit/diary entry/doctor's note/grocery list. Just so everyone knows where I think they stand.

Click on the image to get a readable version. Good luck, and here's hoping you are a real genealogist like me!

Oh, thank you! I just might attain your criteria someday. It certainly gives me something to aspire to.

What a cool chart! I know I will be able to sleep better at night knowing that I am indeed a true genealogist - AND I'll be able to cite my source for that statement.

Decoupage is not really my thing, but I do think it's time to finish knitting that poncho I started two years ago. Please DO NOT tell me ponchos are out of style.

Just a thought, have you considered adding background music to your flowchart? I can hear the old 70s tune already, "Why can't we be friends, Why can't we be friends..."

Thank you.

That was great! I really loved the county clerk comment. About 2 years ago, I was working for an accounting firm that audited the county clerk's office. I was so excited to be on the audit, but I don't think any of my coworkers understood. It was very hard to refrain from poking around the marriage and land records on my lunch break.

Brilliant. Now there needs to be a board game....

I was posting the same thing about how what a great board game this would make and Greta beat my post by just a few minutes with the same thought!

Jennifer if you decide to make a board game out of your flow chart, I would be willing to donate some "Get out of Hell Free" cards to use like in Monopoly.

Have your people call my people LOL!

Glad everyone got a kick out of it. It was fun to make.

@Cynthia: Sadly, yes, ponchos are now out of style. On the bright side, you can now rationally procrastinate on that project, since if you time it right, they may be BACK in style yet again by the time you get re-started.

@Greta & Sheri: I like your thinking. Every time you pass another generation, collect 200 collateral surnames. Cards: "You just won $20 in the NGS essay contest." "Pay 25% member tax to NEHGS for bronze door wax." etc.
